Not really a survey…I hate those as much as you do
With my novice dip into storytelling at Substack, I’m learning the promo ropes. I receive stats every time I post—no need to search like I’ve needed to (but rarely did) on other platforms. So the recent round-up of my 2024 readership (slow in building, since my first post was at Thanksgiving) offered me a chance to send out a survey to my subscribers. And gave me an official chance to share my gratitude for you, that you take the time to look at my words and send me such encouraging notes.
Ah hah, great timing I thought, since I do have some questions for you. But the survey template was more than disappointing—basically a round-up of demographics. I HATE answering generic surveys about every single service I receive. I expect the guy at the dealership who changes my oil to do a good job, I expect the Amazon guy to deliver my packages in a timely way (this might need some other commentary), I expect my doctor to attend to what I need when I’m in her office. I suppose I do understand this constant need for approval in these times of Yelp reviews, but balk at the insistent calls for pats on the back.
If you’ve gotten this far & haven’t deleted me, here’s what I’m wondering:
Is there a day of the week (and time of the day) you’re most likely able to read a recipe post? (This is my #1 quandary.)
Do you read my posts only in your inbox or do you ever go directly to Substack to read other writers or look at my story archive?
Do you have the Substack app on your phone (and do you read posts on your phone)?
Have you shared any posts with like-minded friends or colleagues?
Would you be interested in my recommendations for other writers for you to consider reading on Substack?
Please, if you have the time or inclination, shoot me a direct note: foodesigns@comcast.net.
BUT, after you send me your thoughts, please consider sharing other thoughts, recipe comments or suggestions, or general enjoyment directly on my page at Substack (but don’t get me wrong, I LOVE getting your personal notes, too). It helps push my work if readers note or comment in a public way. And PLEASE share or forward posts whenever you think it might touch someone else.
THANK YOU for any time you can give me, I can’t say how much I appreciate your support!

I have the SS app on my phone and read there occasionally. It find it easier to read longer form writing on my computer. I'm in Central Time Zone and appreciate getting recipes later in the day when I can read and think about them after work.
